How can I fix my computer mouse?

I have an HP touchsmart tm2t. I am overall pleased with the laptop, but I am havingproblems with the computer mouse. When I slide my finger on the pad the mouse on the screen will sometimes make a short movement and then stop and it is hard to make it move again. Sometimes if i swipe my finger across the pad to make the mouse move across the screen it will randomly scroll down the page. It is so annoying that I find myslef using the laptop less and using the other computr in my house. PLease let me know any helpful advice you have thankss
